Q. What did Jesus say about drinking?

A. Matthew, chapter 11 - Jesus said: ¹⁵Anyone who is willing to hear should listen and understand!
¹⁶"How shall I describe this generation? These people are like a group of children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends, ¹⁷`We played wedding songs, and you weren't happy, so we played funeral songs, but you weren't sad.' <sup>18</sup>For John the Baptist didn't drink wine and he often fasted, and you say, `He's demon possessed.' ¹⁹And I, the Son of Man, feast and drink, and you say, `He's a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of the worst sort of sinners! But wisdom is shown to be right by what results from it.'

According to that statement made by Jesus (if the translation is correct) He drank wine. However, did you catch that last sentence? Wisdom is shown to be right by what results from it. I take that to mean, If you abuse alcohol ~ get drunk and hurt someone ~ that's a sin. Not the act of indulgence but what results from it.

I can tell you from experience ~ overindulgence in alcohol is bad and usually bad things result from it. Some folks can't handle it at all.

Q. What was the first miracle Jesus performed?

A. At the request of his mother Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding feast. Gospel Of John, chapter 2.

1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
²   And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
³   And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
⁴   Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
⁵   His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
⁶   And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.
⁷   Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
⁸   And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
⁹   When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
¹⁰   And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
¹¹   This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

REMEMBER WHAT JESUS SAID...

"Wisdom is shown to be right by what results from it."

Usually bad things can be attributed to alcohol. Drive by the typical bar or lounge. You can see a lot of wrong-doing and sin as a result of drinking. Accidents, fights, adultery, illicit sex, bad language, drunkenness. It's not good. It's hard on your body, costs a lot of money that many drinkers can't afford. Worst of all, excessive drinking breaks up families. At this point... IT HAS BECOME A SIN! Because that's what results from it. Did you catch the key word? "EXCESSIVE." It has been said; "all things in moderation." The problem; most drinkers abuse it. No, drinking is not a sin. Only if you drink to excess and sin results from it.

I can't find in the scriptures where the indulgence (short of drunkenness) is a sin... however, bad things that may result from it is a sin! Just that simple.

Man-Made Doctrines Deny The Scriptures...

I have heard it preached that the wine of those days contained no alcohol. If your Pastor preaches that kind of falsehood ~ What else is he/she teaching that is non scriptural?

Here's one of many examples ~ Genesis 9th chapter:
After the flood, Noah became a farmer and planted a vineyard. One day he became drunk on some wine he had made and lay naked in his tent.

Sounds like Noah's wine had some alcohol.

According to scripture: Drunkards will NOT enter the Kingdom of God but there is a vast difference between partaking of wine (or alcohol) and being a drunkard.

In the book of 1st Timothy, Paul instructs the churches on the requirements of selecting the Pastor and Deacons of the church. He spells out who may be allowed to drink wine and who may not. The Pastor may not drink at all. The Deacons must not be heavy drinkers. That would imply that Deacons may drink moderately. It also says that the wives of Deacons should not be heavy drinkers. If it (the wine) were harmless grape juice, I don't believe there would have been any restrictions on it. Read it for yourself and fill yourself with the truth.

You don't need to twist the scriptures to your liking to raise good Christians!

Don't be a drunk! However, don't condemn a son, daughter, friend, relative or church member for the occasional imbibing of alcohol. It ain't scriptural!

I've seen responsible, reasonable Christian people have wine with or without food. They didn't get drunk and fight or commit adultery or have a car wreck and kill a family. SO! DON'T YOU EITHER!

On the other hand - I have seen lives ruined by alcohol! Remember what The Son of God Said: "But wisdom is shown to be right by what results from it."

Author's Note...

Be Careful, there seems to be a fine line between (drinking) it being a sin and non-sin. The real danger may be that it prevents you from association with the right people so you can be (saved) born-again. I apologize for that wimpy answer but it is a possibility... The problem I have with that answer is that I believe God has the power to bring whomever HE chooses to the truth of salvation... BUT... if you make it so hard that the Creator directly brings you into HIS truth it may be pretty traumatic and TOUGH! Try to cooperate.

You know we need air to live but if you get too much (as in hyperventilating) you'll pass out. We need food to live but if you become obese it can kill you. Too much golf can ruin a marriage. So... On... And... On.... You get the idea. OKAY! I'm through.

Be careful out there! Sadly enough ~ There's hell to pay.
